AGRONOMY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY: BEYOND TRANSGENIC CROPS, CONFERENCE ON MONDAY 27 MARCH IN PALERMO - INVITED KEYNOTE SPEAKERS INCLUDE SANT’ANNA SCHOOL RECTOR AND ACADEMICS OF LIFE SCIENCES INSTITUTE
“Beyond Transgenic Crops: Sustainability in Modern Agriculture” conference is being held today on March 27, at University of Palermo, Dipartimento di Scienze Agrarie e Forestali (adress: building no. 4 – Viale di Scienze), regarding several of the most needed aspects of biotechnological sustainability for Italian modern agriculture to successful cultivation of safe food, and crops by characterizing the composition of conventional and transgenically improved crop species and products. Keynote speakers include: Pierdomenico Perata, professor of plant physiology and rector of Sant’Anna School and Mario Enrico Pe’, head of department and professor of plant genomics.
As genomes of many plant species have been sequenced, demand for functional genomics has accelerated the improvement of metabolomics. Metabolomics has contributed significantly to the understanding of plant physiology and biology and to improve plant behaviour under both normal and stressed conditions. Conference speakers will summarize the current knowledge on the genetic and biochemical mechanisms underlying plant growth, development, and stress responses, focusing on the contributions of metabolomics in crop quality improvement and food safety assessment.
